Excerpt of Lonely Heart:
“Kaity, are you sure this is what you want?”
A final scan of the room showed nothing left behind. “Yes, Ebony, I’m positive. Luke made it clear he doesn’t want this baby, which means he doesn’t want me.”
After months of failed attempts to convince my boyfriend of two years that keeping our family together was best, I’d had enough.  The moment he learned about the pregnancy, he suggested abortion. After arguing, he conceded to try and work things out. Everything went fine for a while, but the more I asked him to participate in the doctor’s appointments and for ideas about setting up the baby’s room, the more standoffish he became.
His decision to avoid the sonogram and ignore my calls and text messages was enough.
I had three months until my baby’s arrival.
My baby…Who’d have thought I’d become a single mom?
A few short months ago, my life was perfect. I worked my dream job and had a man who loved me.
Turns out I was wrong about that.
I made some bad decisions in my life, but it was too late to change them now.
For the next three months my focus would be providing my baby with a happy home.  And regardless of what Luke thought, he would still have responsibility in providing for his child.
“That’s everythin’. Let’s get out of here before he gets home.”

The Butterfly Memoirs Series:

EXCERPT For Jaded:
Dear Diary,
I’ve been called a slut, a ho, easy… and a few other words that I refuse to even write on paper.
Since middle school, people have taken one look at my light skin, grey eyes, and the shape of my body and assumed that’s who I was.
Assume.
The first three letters of the word described them. How dare they judge me? Nobody is perfect.
It has never mattered what I’ve done in my life. Being the daughter of a bi-racial marriage has always haunted me. With my fusion of graceful features I’d inherited from my white mother - the slender nose, cat-like eyes, vibrant smile - and the take-no-shit attitude of my black father, people didn’t know how to deal with me.
Guys in school wanted to date me as if I were a trophy. Girls hated the color of my eyes and the texture of my hair.
Things got worse as I got older. Why? Because I love my body and I love sex.
But I never used either to earn money or favors from any man. I am a confident, educated woman who goes for what I want, regardless of what anyone around me has to say. If that means I want a good lay every now and then, I’m damn well entitled to it. But one thing I’d never be is a home wrecker.
My philosophy on love and relationships is simple: sex isn’t love, but it’s nice while you’re waiting.
Well, that’s what I used to think before the man that I fell in love with trampled all over my heart.
And raped my best friend.
Love will never happen for me. No man will ever understand me. The real me.
Not my parents, not my brother, not even my best friends.
My life, my experiences – both good and bad - are what define the real me.

Yasmine

12 days of Christmas Guests day 7: MJ Kane

Please help me in welcoming one of 5 Prince Publishing's bestselling authors, MJ Kane, author of the  Butterfly Memoirs, as she shares her favorite holiday memory.  Don't forget to leave a comment for your chance to win a copy of her eBook and some Shelf Swag from Bernadette Marie.

 My Favorite Holiday Memory

My favorite holiday memory occurred January 2011, a few days after the kids returned to school after Christmas vacation.
Three days into the new semester, Georgia experienced a rare snow storm that shut everything down. If you’ve ever been to Georgia, you know the winters here are crazy. It can be 30 degrees at night and 65 degrees during the day.  Snow can come as flurries that disappear the moment they touch ground, or as severe as an ice storm, coating trees with ice so heavy power lines fall and streets are covered with ‘black’ ice and make driving impossible.  Sometimes we get actual snow that covers several inches of the ground, is nice and fluffy on day one, but as soon as it starts to melt and the temperatures drop, ice covers it. Because Georgia isn’t set up to handle major snow fall, everyone gets an unexpected vacation.
For three days, we were snowed in together, all seven of us and our dog. We had enough food to last a few days and the lights stayed on.  The first two days were spent listening to music, playing Spades, Monopoly, and dancing. Out of sugary sweets, my cousin made sugar cookies from scratch (even though it was missing an ingredient) and they were the best!
By day three, we needed more food. The grocery store was less than a mile away, but the drive was impossible. First of all, our house sat on a hill and the driveway was covered with a sheet of ice at least two inches thick. Backing our Expedition down the hill to a cul-de-sac that covered in ice (if we had ice skates it would have been the perfect ice rink!), was impossible.   My son’s braved the cold, grabbed shovels and chipped away at the ice for a few hours. When we felt we would have enough traction, we piled in the car and slid down the hill. Talk about an adventure! The subdivision had several hills; each one had us holding our breath, praying we’d make it to our destination without sliding into someone else.   We not only made it there, we shopped, and got home, just not up the driveway!
The highlight to that venture was carrying the groceries from the ‘ice rink’ (cul-de-sac), up the slippery slope (driveway) and up the ice covered stairs. My oldest son stomped his way through the ice-hardened snow (snow that was glazed over by a sheet of ice), leaving footholds for us to step in as we made our way to the house. My youngest son carried a bag with plastic bottles of juice. In his efforts to step in the holes, he slipped and the bag he carried busted, sending a bottle of juice sliding down the hill. He tried to catch it, lost his balance, fell on his stomach, and followed the path of the juice. The rest of us laughed our butts off before making our way down to him and the bottles.
Since then, my kids have gotten older; one nearly has his foot out the door and headed to collage. Even the youngest have matured. I am now an author with deadlines, and my hubby, the music producer, stays busy. Finding time for all of us to step away from work, writing, recording, and all forms of electronic devices and get back to the simple things  that make you appreciate your family are hard to do. But this year, I am going to make myself take time for family.
Music, a deck of cards, and sugar cookies. The little things that made the best holiday for me.

The Butterfly Memoirs Series:

Excerpt from A Heart Not Easily Broken:
The song ended, and I opened my eyes to cheer with the rest of the crowd. I was noticed all right. Various men in my immediate vicinity threw out catcalls and whistles, which were flattering, but the drummer paid me no attention. In fact, no one in the band seemed to notice me, except for one man.
One of the guitar players watched me intently. Astonished, I nearly stumbled in my heels. He was attractive but… he was white, not what I was aiming for. My lips tilted in a small smile before I moved out of his line of sight, placing myself in front of dancers who’d moved closer to the stage blocking my view of the drummer.
The next song played, and again, I tried to get lost in the music. My eyes closed, it was impossible to find my groove again without feeling stalked. The hair on the back of my neck stood up, drawing my attention down the length of the stage and to the guitar player, who once again, watched me with a predatory gleam in his eye. When the song ended, I worked my way back to the bar.
Neither Yasmine nor Kaitlyn were there.  They must have gone to the bathroom.
“What can I get you, miss?” the bartender asked, interrupting my thoughts.
Music from the loud speakers blasted again, after the MC announced the band was taking a brief intermission.
“Margarita, extra shot of tequila, please.” The bartender nodded and went to fill my order.
“Did you get a load of the blond guitar player? He’s hot!”
My attention turned to a busty brunette who’d taken up temporary residence in the empty seat next to me. I recognized her as being one of the women who’d been dancing next to me. She adjusted her boobs, primping while talking to her friend.
“He doesn’t know it yet, but I’m going home with him tonight,” she continued. Her friend giggled.
Good luck. She had a better chance than I did of finding a man tonight.
“Here you go.” The bartender placed a napkin in front of me with my drink.
“I’ve got this,” a deep voice said close to my ear, making me jump. It was incredibly sexy despite the fact it scared me. It also sent a warm tingle down my spine. Intrigued, I turned and found myself face-to-face with the guitar player. The same one my barstool neighbor wanted to go home with.
Any sort of coherent words failed me.
