A single day shattered her life and set in motion, events that would change the Sullivan family for generations.

Marnie Joe Sullivan had the perfect life as the daughter of a wealthy Virginia businessman, but perfection wouldn't last. As the War Between the States ends, she is struggling to keep her family together. After a botched robbery, fleeing rebels leave her mother dead and Marnie at the mercy of a killer. The year is 1867 and Virginia is still home to Confederate conspirators and a killer that must be stopped. Loyalty and love run deep in the Sullivan family and Marnie is no exception. As the eldest Sullivan, she feels obligated to rescue her father from the hangman’s noose. But a jailbreak at midnight lands her in the arms of Marshal Mason Kane.
Death is never fair. Mason Kane is proof of that. The horror of war and the death of his brother made him a drunk. Consumed by guilt and grief, he finds himself occupying Richmond saloons and starting fights. But a forgotten promise to his brother forces him to put down the bottle and accept a friend’s plea for help. Mason has no idea that the scrawny, mud covered boy he just hit is Sullivan’s daughter and he has no idea just how tempting she is until he tries to mend her wounds. Bound by honor and promise, Mason sets out to find a killer. What he finds is the outlaw Marnie Sullivan. A woman he can’t live without and secrets that lie in the way.

Love is like a snowflake; beautiful but fleeting in its presence…
I’ve been in love. But I’ve also been lied to, betrayed by those closest to me and I’ve suffered loss. Sadly it’s those last three things that stick with me the most. The only real constants in my life are music, Angus my dog and Rhiannon; my guitar.
But things changed when she walked into my place of work. All blue eyes, curves and a warmth that could melt even my hardened heart. I was taken over by feelings that I didn’t expect so soon. Guilt plagued me and I took my anger out on her.
On Mallory.
But I fell fast and hard and there was nothing I could do to stop it. When she too became the victim of heartbreak I was the only one who understood her pain but I was the last person she wanted help from.

Would I ever convince her that we could be friends? And would I ever accept that she couldn’t love me back?

Author Spotlight/Interview with Lisa J. Hobman

It is with great honor I have author Lisa J. Hobman on my blog today. This amazingly talented author has brought such delight to me as a reader and I have been blessed and am able to call her a dear friend as well. If you haven't read Lisa I can't urge you enough to check out one of her books and I promise you'll be a fan for life.

Tell us a little bit about yourself.
I’m a happily married mum of one with two crazy dogs and a passion for all things tartan. Scotland has been my home since 2012 and I absolutely love the place. Writing took over my life after the relocation and I haven’t stopped since!

What is your favorite thing about being a writer?
I love the whole character creation part of writing. Getting to know the people I invent and choosing their personalities is great fun! In fact after writing Bridge Over the Atlantic my hubby and I re-visited the location of the book in the Highlands and standing on the bridge made me quite emotional. It almost felt like Greg was going to come walking toward me with Angus his dog. Greg is still my favourite character of all – but shhhh don’t tell the others! ;-)

Are you a plotter or a pantser?
I actually do a little bit of both! I start off by planning but then the story or the characters usually take me off at tangents and the whole plan goes out the window! But I do try to use a timeline for events and I stick to that as I find it really helps with continuity.

How would you describe yourself if you were “speed dating” your readers?
I’m scatterbrained and I can’t talk the hind leg off a donkey but I’m good fun to be around usually!

What’s something fans would find fascinating about you?
My other passion is singing and I actually perform in a duo with a good friend who plays guitar. We have done a couple of support gigs but recently we performed our first headline gig which was great fun!

How do your family and/or friends feel about your book or writing venture in general?
My mum and dad are so very proud of me and they make sure I know it as often as possible. Rich, my hubby was the one who encouraged me to give writing a shot in the first place and he is my first beta reader. He’s also  the person I bounce all of my ideas off. I think my friends were a little surprised when they discovered I was writing my first novel but now I’ve finished my sixth they take it in their stride and some are beta readers for me which is wonderful. I feel very fortunate to have such a supportive group of people around me.

Please share with us your future projects and upcoming releases.
I am hoping my next release will be a companion novel to Bridge Over the Atlantic called Bridge of Hope. In this book you will get to know Greg a little more as it’s written from his point of view.

Excerpt of The Girl Before Eve:
Friends Will Be Friends (Queen)
The Beginning of Lily and Adam
“She is my friend, Stewart Campbell, and if I see you pinch anything from her ever, ever again or try to push her over, I will punch you on the nose, and then I’ll tell Mrs. Craven and she’ll tell your mum, and then you’ll be grounded…forever!” Adam yelled as he towered over the snivelling little blonde-haired boy whose T-shirt he was grasping.
“I’m going to tell my dad on you, and he’ll come to your house and kick your dad’s arse, and he’s lots bigger than your dad, you smelly pig!” Stewart retorted through his tears and threw the packet of crisps on the playground, the contents spilling out. He stamped on the crisps, crumbling them under his feet.
Adam laughed in the other boy’s face. “Oh no, he isn’t, and now I’m going to tell Mrs. Craven that you said a swear word! Don’t you ever hurt her again, do you hear me? She’s a girl and you should never, ever hit girls or pinch their snack. And now you’ve dropped it on the floor and she hasn’t got one. You’re just mean and nasty, Stewart Campbell. And that’s why nobody likes you!” Adam released the blonde boy’s T-shirt and pushed him away. The boy ran off to the other side of the playground just as the lunchtime supervisor came around the corner. She must have noticed the gathered crowd of children.
“Everything alright over here, Adam?” the tall, red-haired lady asked with a sour look on her face.
“Yes, Mrs. Craven. Stewart Campbell said a rude word though, so I told him off and said I was going to tell.”
“Oh did he now? That boy needs to learn some manners. I think I’ll tell his teacher. Perhaps a quick call home might be in order.” Mrs. Craven glanced toward Adam’s friend just as Lily wiped the tears from her eyes and pushed the mass of wild, dark curls from her damp face. “Lily? Have you been crying?”
Lily nodded.
“What happened?” Mrs. Craven asked, narrowing her eyes.
Lily worriedly looked to Adam.
“It’s okay, Mrs. Craven. Stewart was being mean and he took her snack and threw it on the floor and stamped on it. But I told him off for that, too.”
Mrs. Craven smiled and ruffled Adam’s scruffy, dark hair. “Eeeh, for nothing but a six-year-old boy you do look after her well, don’t you, son? You keep that up.” She patted his head lightly and then turned to walk over to where Stewart had run off to sulk.
Once Mrs. Craven was out of sight and the crowd of children had dispersed, Adam turned to Lily. “Here, you can have the rest of my crisps if you like.” He held out the blue crinkly packet to her.
“Thank you, Adders,” she croaked, almost in a whisper. “Youre my bestest friend.”
“Aye, I know that and you’re my bestest friend too, Lil, and Stewart Campbell is just a big meanie. You need to stay away from him. I’ll make sure he isn’t nasty to you again though. Don’t worry.” The two children walked over to the grass and sat down side by side.
“Are you coming to my house for tea on Saturday? My papa says we can have the paddling pool out if it’s sunny?” Lily asked munching on the salt and vinegar crisps.
Adam nodded. “Yep…I can’t wait. I’ve got one of those big water pistols that soak you through, so you’d better watch out.” He nudged her with a wide grin fixed in place.
She giggled. “Yeah, well I’m going to make sure I get my big sand castle bucket out then, and it holds about ten gallons of water, so you’d better watch out.” She nudged him back.
He snorted. “It does not! And anyway I’m a faster runner than you, so you’d better watch out.” He chuckled.
“It does, too! And you’re not faster than me…you run like a girl!” Lily jumped to her feet and set off at a sprint, her musical laughter echoing behind her.
“I’ll get you Lily Macrae! Just you wait!” Adam laughed heartily as he sprang up from the grass and set off in pursuit.
And there began the soundtrack to Adam and Lily’s lives…

Monday Marketing: Let's Talk Branding

 Think about things in your everyday life. Brands. If you drive through McDonalds on your way to the office and pick up breakfast, you know what you're going to get. Same with walking into a Starbucks, or opening a bottle of Coca-Cola. Not only do these products have a certain expectation when you enjoy the product, but you'd recognize them just by looking at the insignia, even if the name wasn't attached to the product.

Authors have their own branding as well. Think about why you follow an author from book to book. You like the author's voice (the way they write the story.) You like the stories themselves, be it may be romance, erotic, historical, mystery or any other genre. Every once in a while an author will try a new tactic and it disrupts the branding the audience is comfortable with. Well, if you're an author you'll quickly pick up on their like or dislike of this certain maneuver.

Let's look at a few of my favorite authors and see if we can find some of their branding tactics.

The first author I fell in love with was Sidney Sheldon in the mid-eighties. His style was quick paced and easy to read. His chapters were very small. His descriptions minimal and he told you a story more than engaging you in it. But, I ate it up. I couldn't get enough of his strong heroines in their amazing positions. I felt a huge loss when he died because that branding of his voice became part of me.

Nora Roberts is another that I fell in love with 2007, yes I can even pinpoint the moment I picked up my first Nora book.  Anyone who has read many Nora books can probably vouch for the difference in style from when she wrote for Harlequin and when she moved to Penguin. There is a different feel to her stories. But one thing remained between sweet romances and romantic suspense...her voice stayed the same. You are pulled in by the characters and thrust into their lives. You become part of a family, you are the loner, you do fall in love with the bad guy. Nora Roberts can weave a tale of three-hundred plus pages that you can't put down. Part of the branding is you know you're going to need to carve out an afternoon to read.

Karen White is another favorite of mine and completely different from Nora. Karen often writes in first person. Usually I'm not drawn to first person books, but Karen's are different. I'm pulled into that person and I become that person. I have even read Karen where she intermixes first and third person seamlessly. Karen's books are based more in the south. The dialect is there. The southern hospitality is there. A difference between her and Nora is Nora will be a bit more edgy. She'll take you into the bedroom with her characters where Karen will shut the door and let you go on thinking what you want to think. Certainly neither lets you down, but you know going in this is what you're going to get.

Let's look at my marketing. Now I've done a few things where I've played with my style. My voice is the same. I have engaging characters that pull you in with their common everyday dialogue. I don't put a lot of detail into what I write when I write scenery. I let the audience build that in their heads with the details I give them. Early on I would take you into the bedroom with my characters but as I grew as an author I began to shut the door. Still the tension is there and, well, you know what is going on. At one point an ex-publisher, who after having contracted me, decided she was a Christian publisher and made me change all my books to read as such. Well, I don't write Christian books and  that was taking away my voice. But, when I opened my own house I thought I could engage that audience too by having a regular version of my book and a sweetened version as well.  In time it was too much work to do both, but what happened was those who expected sweet and clean, they got to book four where there were some sexy scenes and the bad reviews came. It was time to get a grip on my voice branding. My books are not full of curses or sex, but my readers have come to expect that here and there there might be a few bits of this.

Don't change your voice to try and entice. Your voice will be what brands you to your reader.

Now lets look at what you write. You can have a great career genre hopping, but there needs to be some consistency among your books as well. My biggest suggestion is, if you're going to write Romantic Suspense, then put out at least four books in the genre before hopping over to Historical. Your readers are going to follow you, but they might be reluctant. If you only have one book in each genre they will more than likely look over your name.

If you're content with writing one kind of genre get to work! In my case, I have branded myself as an author that writes engaging family series. My bestselling Keller Family Series will run into 10 books, and this is all reader driven. The series was supposed to be four books. My readers know that if they pick up one of my books they will have strong women to grip on to. They will often have a family and/or friends who are supportive and engaging and they will get Happily ever after.... always because that is my tag line. If you want a feel good romance, you come to Bernadette Marie.

Let's take a look at book covers as well.  I've included my covers on the blog today. One thing I have carried over on all of my book covers is my name. As CEO of my own publishing company I can make sure that my name always reads the same. People see that and the know me. It is the same on my website and on all my materials. My head shot is the same in all my books and on my site as well. Though in time I'll get a new one...this one looks just like me and people know that is me. The font on the name and the picture are the same.

I also have a simple way about my covers. I'm including the covers here too of author Lisa J. Hobman and Susan Lohrer. You will see they too have a branding going with their kinds of covers. Lisa's voice too brand her with how she organizes her stories. You are not always in present day. You are, though out her books, taken back and forth through the lives of her characters...seamlessly.  Susan writes romantic comedy and you can't help but to keep turning pages to find out what crazy thing is going to happen next.

   Interaction with your readers is another way of branding yourself. My readers know that if they interact with me on Twitter or Facebook I'm going to interact back. My posts on Facebook are friendly and engaging where on Twitter I tend to talk more about my books and my blog.
In the end, branding is consistency. Just like that cup of Starbucks coffee, you want to know what you're going to get.

Happy Branding!

Chapter 1
February 2009 - The break up
“So, that’s it then, Flick?” Jim raised his arms in exasperation. “You’re leaving? You’ve completely given up?” He was past trying to convince Flick that they could make a go of it; work things out; get through this and come out the other side stronger. The past few months had been one argument after another and Flick had spent less and less time at home.
“It’s for the best, James. And please don’t call me Flick.” She sighed, “It’s not my name. Not anymore. I grew up. It’s good in the adult world you should visit sometime, you might like it.” She snorted derisively.
Jim shook his head; sadness oozing from every pore, “Aye, well you’ll always be Flick to me. And I’ll always be Jim. What’s with all this ‘Felicity and James’ bollocks anyway?” His accent always became stronger when he was angry. This was one of those occasions when the true Scotsman came out fighting. His chest heaved as he tried to calm the storm raging beneath his skin.
He almost didn’t recognise the woman standing before him in their bedroom; her fitted designer clothes complete with pearls and a shoulder length smooth sleek hairstyle. Such a contrast to the girl he fell in love with. Back then it was all flowing blonde waves and long, floating skirts. She was softer then; in every way.
“Well, as I said James, Felicity is my name…Flick was left behind at university. She was doe-eyed, foolish and rash…look, there’s no point us going over old ground,” she pulled the handle up on her wheeled suitcase, “I’ll be staying with Polly and Matt for a while whilst I figure out my next move.”
Matt had once been Jim’s closest friend but that friendship had somehow fizzled as his relationship with Polly had intensified. That saddened Jim.
Felicity went on, “Nilsson-Perkins have offered to help find me a new place near the city centre so I can be closer to the main gallery.” She wandered over to him and placed her hand on his arm. “It’s for the best, James. I think you know that deep down.”
He looked, pleadingly, into her eyes, his chest still rising and falling at a rapid rate. “For whom? For me?. I don’t think so.” His voice cracked as he shook his head; he stared intently and for several moments she seemed caught in his eyes. He thought he saw her shield begin to melt but she shook her head and looked away.
Turning back to him she shrugged her shoulders. “It was inevitable when you think about it. We’re from two different worlds…we want completely different things, James.” Her voice softened as she squeezed his arm. Her blue eyes, however, that were once full of love, were ice cold.
She wheeled her case toward the bedroom door and turned back to face him one last time. Her eyes were glassy with unshed tears now and Jim was relieved to see some, albeit small, expression of human emotion from the woman he had witnessed, slowly, becoming some kind of hard, Siberian robot.
“For what’s it’s worth…James…I do love you. You were my first love and so I probably always will. I just feel like…” she paused, clenching her eyes closed as if to find the strength to carry on speaking, a tear escaped. “Like maybe we’re not good for each other. We’ve grown apart. I’m ambitious and you…you want babies and the white picket fence thing…I’m just not ready…I’m not sure I ever will be. In a way I’m doing you a favour.” A sob escaped her throat as she spoke, “This way at least you get to meet someone new and have children anddo all the family things that I’m just not capable of.” She sounded to Jim as though she was trying to convince herself.
Jim’s lower lip began to tremble. “I don’t want anyone else…it’s you. It’s always been you.” He clenched his jaw. “What I don’t get, Felicity, is that you wanted those things too. We were both on the same page. I don’t understand how we changed.”
“We didn’t change. I did. Like I said, I grew up.” She shook her head. “I know that you haven’t changed.” She snorted. “Sorry, Jim but it’s true. In all these years you’ve kept the same hairstyle, the same clothing and the same laid back attitude. You still work in the same second hand book store, you still drive that ancient Land Rover and you still take that bloody dog everywhere you go! You’re not a student anymore, James. Maybe I want more, huh? Maybe I want someone who makes an effort!” Her voice gained an octave as her emotions began to get the better of her.
Jim widened his eyes in horror. “Whoa! Now just hang on there, lassie!” He held up his hands and his stomach knotted at her stabbing words as they sliced at his heart.
He stepped toward her. “You can’t say that I don’t make effort. Just because I’m in no way materialistic doesn’t mean I don’t care. I love you. I always have. You are my world! I don’t need things, Felicity, I need you!” His heart ached as it bombarded theinside of his chest. “I’ve done everything in my power to make you happy. I don’t know what else I could have done. And for the record, I’m not the one who’s given up here!” He raised his voice too, finally giving in to the pent up frustration he’d been harbouring.
“James, we want different things, accept it. Move on…please!” She opened the door and he made a grab for her. She swung around and crashed into his arms. Without thinking he took her face in his hands and kissed her with all the passion he could muster. To his amazement she didn’t slap him; she kissed him back. Dropping her suitcase she seemed overwhelmed by desire, anger, passion, lust, whatever the hell it was; she grabbed at his dark, shaggy hair as he ran his hands through hers; desperate to express his love for her; desperate to make her change her mind.
He moved from her mouth to her neck, his kisses urgent. Her head rolled backward and she moaned, grabbing at his T-shirt and pulling it over his head in one swift aggressive move. Before either could realize what they were doing or how they got there, they staggered backward and tumbled, wrapped around each other, onto the bed; their lips locked as their tongues danced and p

EXCERPT of Bridge Over the Atlantic:
January 2011

“You can NOT be serious?!” Mallory Westerman recoiled. It wasn’t a habit of hers, to inadvertently quote 1980’s sports stars. But even she was surprised when she heard John McEnroe’s words fall from her lips.
Thankfully, her fiancĂ©, whilst obviously bemused at her reaction and frustrated by her lack of enthusiasm, didn’t really notice the similarities between her and the wiry haired tennis supremo. He was much too busy stroking the print-out in front of him, on the table, as if ironing out the creases would make his suggestion a more viable proposition.
“Honey, imagine the life we could have there right now,” he pleaded. “The open spaces, the fresh air-…”
“The midge bites, the lack of internet connection, no other civilisation for miles.” She rudely interrupted. She immediately felt guilty when Sam’s eyes took on the appearance of a scolded puppy dog. She slid her arms around his neck caressing the sides of his beautiful face. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. I just don’t see me…either of us, really, taking to a permanent life out in the middle of goodness knows where at this point in our lives, surrounded by sheep and wearing wellies and Tweeds!”
“Now you are being terribly stereotypical and insulting to all things countryside, Mallory,” Sam chastised in his Canadian drawl. “And besides, I think you’d look very fetching in wellies….just wellies that is, nothing else.” He grabbed her playfully and squeezed her. His green eyes flashed with a mischievousness Mallory had come to adore. She giggled and gazed up at him, lovingly recalling the first time she had found herself utterly mesmerised by him.

~~~~~
December 2009
Mallory had lived in Yorkshire all the twenty-eight years of her life. Since dropping out of her PR course at Uni, through sheer laziness, she had endured a run of soulless jobs. Nothing ever really pushed her buttons. That was until an inheritance from her dear Aunt Sylvia had given her the opportunity to do the one thing she truly wanted to do.
Her little gift emporium, Le Petit Cadeau.
It had been the brain child of her Aunt many years before, when Mallory had taken to making her own Christmas gifts one year when, as was the case on more than one dreadful occasion, unemployment occurred on the brink of the festive season.
She had sobbed and sobbed when the solicitor informed her that her Aunt had left her the large sum of money under strict conditions that she was to, ‘get off her backside and do something fulfilling for once!.’ She remembered almost laughing aloud at the point when the solicitor had uttered the quote directly as her Aunt had written it. Even in death, feisty Sylvia knew how to draw a chuckle from her beloved niece.
It was a fairly quiet early December Wednesday in Leeds, well perhaps quiet was not the right way to put it. The city centre was the usual bustling metropolis, but the Victoria Quarter was, ostensibly, being given a somewhat brief reprieve from the usual barrage of festive shoppers. Mallory huffed as she watched a swooning couple canoodling whilst browsing in the window of the lingerie boutique opposite.
“Sod this for a game of soldiers. I think I need a break,” she informed one of the cute, jointed, stiff teddy bears sitting, looking pensive on the shelf next to where she perched. “I reckon there is a tall, caramel macchiato with my name on it somewhere!”
Grabbing her oversized bag she chalked Back in 20 mins on her very own, handmade door sign. Once she had dropped the latch she headed out into the sea of suited business people and Christmas shoppers. She smirked at the vast number of pre-school children who were sporting cheap red Santa hats lovingly procured for them, she guessed, by harassed parents as bribery for good behaviour.
The paved precinct area was buzzing. Mallory loved Leeds City Centre with its designer boutiques and quirky shops. At this time of year, however, there was something transcendent about the atmosphere. Maybe it was the twinkling lights strung from building to building or the way that each and every shop was decked in sparkling silvers and gregarious gold. The myriad Christmas songs, being played in numerous outlets all out of synch with one another, were an assault on the senses. The stalls all laid out, down the centre of the precinct, were vying for the attention of passers-by with their brightly coloured gifts and trinkets. A delicious aroma of roast chestnuts wafted through the chilled air and into Mallory’s nostrils making her tummy grumble.
She rounded the corner heading for her favourite coffee shop when suddenly she involuntarily lurched forward. Her stiletto heel had become lodged in between two paving slabs, sending her and her belongings, hurtling into the arms of a passing stranger.
“Whoaaaa there!” The startled man grabbed for Mallory, in a bid to stop her inevitable collision with the pavement. “We haven’t been formally introduced and yet here you are throwing yourself at me!” He laughed. His accent was noticeably of the North American variety.
